So I've been reading a lot about using all sorts of different technology in the classroom. The most common use of technology is Apple products and E-Readers. But some blogs I've looked at are pretty negative about technology. I think using technology in the classroom is extremely important. Since its everywhere, children should be taught how to use it sensibly and safely, and perhaps school is the first place children are able to get their hands on all this technology.
But books and whiteboards shouldn't be overlooked either. I think actually holding and reading a book is much more effective than reading from a Kindle. I also think that I would prefer to include mini whiteboards into activities than Ipads. However, I would like to include technology in lessons. So I think that perhaps an equal balance of these would be the best way to go about teaching.
I think I will try and include ICT in lessons or activities at some point in a placement, and will feedback on how it goes.

Hi Rebecca, Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with you that a balance is the way to go. There is little point using technology just for the sake of it, and actually discussing with children when technology is the best tool for the job and when it isn't is really important. My old class and I looked at this a while ago here: http://4oqblog.wordpress.com/2011/05/17/writing-by-hand-or-on-the-computer/
I am interested in why you think holding a book is better than a Kindle? I find reading on Kindle's very good with their easy to read screens and the ability to take electronic notes and share useful quotes. However, I much prefer paper books for books which have a lot of diagrams or graphics as the Kindle doesn't really display them too well.

Hi
DeleteI agree that the ability to share and highlight quotes on the Kindle is a really good feature and I would definately encourage it. However, I've always found that I enjoyed reading from a book more than my Kindle, especially, as you pointed out, for books with graphics and picture. Also, I think I would rather read to a class using a big book but I might give using a kindle a go at some point. :)

Hi Rebecca
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on starting up your blog. I'm a first year teacher from New zealand and came for visit via twitter.
I think before you talk about what technology to use and how you need to think about the why. What purpose do you think technology in educations?
Stephanie
Hi Stephanie
DeleteThank you!
That's actually something I haven't given as much thought as maybe I should have, so thank you for bringing that to my attention :)
What do you think about this?
Rebecca
Hi Rebecca,
ReplyDeleteThis is also something I am very aware of and have a keen interest in. I actually did an assignment last year on technology in the classroom, and although I did go to some extremes, I also come to the same conclusion that there has to be a balance.
I do still worry that technology will become the "be all and end all" but hopefully we can keep some of the basic foundations, such as handwriting, around for a long, long time.

Hi Adam
DeleteThank you for your comment.
This worries me too, I hope that children will continue to appreciate books etc. As well as technology!
